The Lung/Gastrointestinal Oncology Department mainly focuses on the international standardized diagnosis of lung cancer and gastrointestinal tumors, as well as individualized and molecular targeted therapy and clinical research of new anti-cancer drugs. The staff are among the leading diagnosis/treatment experts and professional nurses in China. A large number of successful cases have been accumulated on precise targeted therapy of lung and gastrointestinal tumors in the department. The medical and nursing professionals of the department are particularly experienced and skilled in handling difficult cases of clinical diagnosis and therapy.
In the medical team of the department, all the doctors have master’s or PhD degrees in a multi-disciplinary background, including Oncology, Respiratory Medicine, Radiation Oncology, Pathology and Pathophysiology, and Biostatistics.
Great importance is attached to the combination of clinical practice with research of basic medicine. Precise positioning puncturing of lung tumors and other advanced clinical operations are skillfully and efficiently carried out. Rich clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of difficult cases is obtained. In the basic research area of lung cancer, of the department is the first in the hospital to win the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) which supports targeted therapy and basic research of lung cancer. Besides，a doctor of the department made an oral presentation at an American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) conference—the first one in the hospital to present anti-cancer research advances at an high-level international meeting and a remarkable breakthrough for the hospital. The pre-clinical experiment of BBSKE, a TrxR1 targeted new drug of National Category 1.1, is accomplished in the department and the drug is carried on to phase I clinical study.
Oncologists of the department have won three provincial medical awards; undertaken more than ten studies of international multi-center randomized clinical research; carried out a number of projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Hunan Provincial Natural Science Foundation; and published forty papers in domestic or foreign core journals and four papers in SCI source journals.
Prof. Yang Nong, the academic leader of the department, has been dedicated to "precision treatment of lung cancer" and targeted therapy of gastrointestinal tumors, especially the diagnosis and treatment of difficult cases. He has supervised a number of graduate students, and under his guidance, his medical team have helped many patients to find a door of hope to recovery by "precision treatment".

Specializes in chemotherapy and targeted therapy of lung cancers, gastrointestinal cancers and lymphoma. Very experienced in biotherapy of colorectal cancer, renal cancer, and malignant melanoma. Dr. He also pioneered in the province in larger-dose chemotherapy after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for malignant lymphoma, small cell lung cancer, breast cancer.
