Introduction

The Department of Interventional Radiology (Ward 4) is characterized by minimally invasive treatment of tumors  and closely combines clinical work, cancer research and medical teaching. Interventional radiology developed rapidly in the late 1970s and is a growing specialty of minimally invasive medicine, integrating medical imaging and clinical science and involving diagnosis and treatment of diseases in almost all human organ systems (digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, urinary, and skeletal). Interventional radiology is a comprehensive application of artificial intelligence and advanced materials in the medical field today.

Interventional radiology has such advantages as minimal invasiveness, high repeatability, accurate positioning, good efficacy, quick results, low rates of complications, combined use of various easy-to-hangle techniques and other features.  Interventional medicine provides a new therapeutic approach to various cancers or cardiovascular diseases, which have long been believed to be incurable or complicated. Compared to traditional internal medicine and surgery, interventional radiology has its unique characteristics, providing a new route of drug administration and alternative surgical methods for modern medical treatment, so that patients have a greater chance of recovery, and it is increasingly becoming the preferred method of selective treatment.

Hunan Cancer Hospital is a leading member of the Management Committee of Interventional Oncology of Hunan Province, and the Interventional Oncology Committee of Hunan  Radiology Society. The Department of Interventional Radiology of the hospital began cancer intervention in the 1980s, a pioneer in this field in Hunan Province, and now its clinical practice covers the diagnosis and treatment of almost all solid tumors.

Services provided by the Department of Interventional Radiology include: (1) treatment of various tumors, such as liver cancer, stomach cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, esophageal cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, cervical cancer and bone cancer, and infusion chemotherapy and embolotherapy of metastatic tumors and  recurrent tumors of various types; (2) microwave ablation and argon-helium cryoablation of liver, lung, kidney, bone, head and neck, and abdominal and pelvic tumors and lesions; (3) puncture drainage of biliary obstruction and  abdominopelvic abscess; (4) dilation and stenting of non-vascular stenosis: benign and malignant esophageal stenosis, gastrointestinal anastomotic stricture, bowel obstruction, and biliary obstruction stricture; (5) vena cava filters and thrombolytic therapy of venous thrombosis; (6) embolization of hypersplenism, gastrointestinal bleeding, and bronchiectasis hemoptysis; (7) embolization of liver hemangiomas and uterine fibroid; (8) planting of percutaneous radioactive particles, local drug injection, biopsy of celiac disease of the body systems,  and nerve block anesthesia; and (9) angiography, angioplasty or stenting in any part of the body;

The staff of the department insist on the concept of standardized and individualized comprehensive treatment, actively explore new technologies and methods of comprehensive interventional treatment, closely follow the international frontier, and focus on the latest advances of evidence-based medicine. Currently, the department holds a leading position in Hunan Province and even nationwide in the minimally invasive comprehensive interventional treatment of liver, lung, kidney and bladder cancers, bone tumors, and metastases of various neoplasms.

The Department of Interventional Radiology has a medical and nursing team of 22 professionals: two chief physicians, three associate chief physicians and two attending physicians, of whom one holds an MD degree, five are studying for their MDs and one has a bachelor’s degree; one associate chief nurse, three supervisor nurses and one senior nurse; and one supervisor technician. The department has a number of experts who hold positions in various academic associations: the Minimally Invasive Cancer Treatment Committee of China Anti-Cancer Association, Interventional Oncology Committee of China Anti-Cancer Association, National Tumor Targeted Therapy Committee of Chinese Biotechnology Society, Management Committee of Interventional Oncology of Hunan Hospital Association, Hunan Medical Imaging Association, Hunan Radiology Association, Hunan Radiological Medicine and Protection Committee, and Oncology Committee of Chinese Medical Association Hunan Radiology Society. The specialists of the department have long been engaged in clinical interventional oncology and research in this field. Many of them have participated in professional trainings and academic and teaching activities at home and abroad. As many as 10  National Natural Science Foundation and provincial department level research projects are conducted or headed by staff members of the department, more than 50 papers are published and five books are written with department faculty members as first authors or co-authors.

The department always aims at providing patient-centered care,  first-rate services, top-quality treatment and skilled nursing. Patients’ speedy recovery is the faculty’s common aspiration.
