The Department of Radiation Oncology-Lymphoma and abdominal section of Hunan Cancer Hospital is the key specialty of Hunan Province. In accordance with the aims of the hospital’s development which are cancers should be treated in sub-divided specialty departments by the Doctors with great expertise. The main emphasis of cancer treatment of ward 29 has been shifted to the radiotherapy of lymphoma and abdominal malignancies since 2010. Besides the routine clinical works, other clinical researches have also been actively pursued in this department. The most prominent clinical research features are radiotherapies guided by PET-CT, a advanced functional molecular imaging equipment, and by using different imaging agents, pinpointing the active metabolic areas and/or radiation-resistant hypoxic regions of tumors, so as to implement biological targeted Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) to improve tumor control and as much as possible to minimize radiation sequelae.
Professor Zhu suyu, the department director, who had previously trained in the field of radiation oncology in Poland, Japan and France consecutively, leads the team to work out variety of protocol guidelines in the specialty of lymphoma and abdominal malignancies. The department-reached consensus guidelines are mainly focused on the IMRT, especially in the radiation target delineation. Which include early extra nodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, mediastinal lymphoma, gastric cancer, gastric lymphoma, prostate cancer and rectal cancer.
Currently, there are 3 professors, 1 associate professor, 2 physicians in charge, 3 residents and an excellent multidisciplinary team which consisted of well-known experts, physician with PhD and MS, senior nurse and nutritional therapists in the department. Under the leadership of director Zhu Suyu, the team members cooperate by following protocol treatment and combining with individualized therapy, clinical treatment combining with scientific research and teaching, Excellent therapeutic effect in many malignancies has been achieved and praise been won by the society and many patients.
The department staff members are also active in scientific research. 2 key scientific research achievement awards had been achieved so far. They are Hunan Science and Technology Commission Research Award and Hunan Health Department Research Award. Also, great attention had been paid to develop collaborative relationship with domestic institutions, including Cancer Institute and Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) and School of Electrical Engineering, Hunan University. A series of scientific fund had been obtained, including a national natural science fund, an international cooperation project, a few provincial natural science fund, a provincial health department fund, a hospital research platform construction funds and a hospital youth science and technology fund. More than 30 papers have been published, 10 of them are in SCI journals.
At present, except for using high-precision radiotherapy techniques to treat common types of cancer, the clinical and scientific research in this department are focusing on the following subjects.
⒈Gastrointestinal cancer, such as the postoperative three dimensional conformal radiotherapy(3D-CRT) or intensity modulated radiotherapy(IMRT) for gastric cancer and rectal cancer patients.
2.PET/CT image-guided functional molecule biological targeting IMRT and 3D-CRT for various types of tumor.
⒊Individualized radiotherapy for lymphoma: According to lymphoma classification, staging, risk stratification, and IPI scores to implement regional lymph nodes involved field (INRT) or involved field 3D-CRT and IMRT.
4. Preoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy for rectal cancer: the purpose is to improve the rate of anal function preservation and reduce the recurrence rate.
5. Preoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy for gastric cancer: the purpose is to increase gastric resection rate and reduce the relapse rate.
6. Simultaneous integrated boost IMRT for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
In addition to the application of new radiotherapy technology, the first case of PEG (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy) had been successful performed in our department and has gradually applied in the whole hospital. At the same time, we have been using the Enteral Nutrition Support Technology to improve the nutritional status and life quality of patients with head & neck cancer or gastrointestinal tumor. The objective of our department is not only to make patients survive, but also to provide them with a quality life.
