The First Treatment Planning System with “Monte Carlo Algorithm” in Hunan Was Put into Use in the Hospital
Radiotherapy Center of the hospital has one more advanced equipment. In June 2015, the first treatment planning system with “Monte Carlo Algorithm” in Hunan was put into use in the Radiotherapy Center of the hospital. Up to the end of July, the system has finished designing intensity-modulated radiotherapy plans for about 50 patients.
Treatment planning system is one of the important equipment of radiotherapy, whose function mainly involves depicting the target area of radiotherapy and normal tissues and assessing or contrasting doses, etc. Generally, the radiotherapy doctor will use the system to delineate the target area and normal organs of the patient and determine doses of the clinical prescriptions, while the physicist will use the system to design treatment plans and simulate distribution of doses in the body of the patient. Finally，the radiotherapy doctor and physicist will evaluate the treatment plan together and enter the satisfactory treatment plan into therapeutic machine through the special network for radiotherapy. Quality of the treatment planning system will affect directly the accuracy and precision of distribution of radiation. The kernel of treatment planning system is the algorithm for computing doses.
“Monte Carlo Algorithm” is the gold standard for computing doses of radiotherapy, which can precisely simulate the distribution of doses in the human body. The algorithm boasting superior precision over algorithms of other treatment planning systems seldom has errors in computing, which makes it the most advanced one for dosage computing, especially suitable for thoracic radiotherapy.
The Monaco treatment planning system developed by Swedish Elekta Company and introduced to the hospital recently is the only system in the world that adopts “Monte Carlo algorithm”, which can design plans like IMRT or VMAT, etc. The hospital is the first one in Hunan to own the treatment planning system with “Monte Carlo algorithm”. With support of leaders of the hospital and its radiotherapy department, physicists from the radiotherapy center have been using weekends and holidays since March to collect data and construct models for the treatment planning system. Finally, they finished verifying dosages of the planning system and make it up to the international standards for clinical use. By virtue of the system, we can provide preciser radiotherapy for our patients to realize best containment on the tumors while giving best protection to the patients’ normal organs.
