Santa Visiting the Ward, What a Surprise for Cancer Patients!

“Merry Christmas, Happy New Year!”, sings the Santa on December 19  in Hunan Cancer Hospital, who walks from one ward to another offering gifts, playing games, performing magic, giving puzzles and candies. The patients are cheered up instantly. Mrs. Wang who catchs up breast cancer feels amazed on receiving the blessings and thanks the hospital for this well-wished surprise.

In fact, this is one part of the“Soul Concert” held by Hunan Cancer Hospital for celebrating the New Year. The concert as an important constituent of the Spiritual Care service has been held for 6 times since its debut of 2014. When Christmas and New Year is around the corner, the spirit-caring group of the hospital works with students from Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University to stage this concert which focuses on the theme “Care from the Youth and A New Year Celebrated Together”, by highlighting “Santa Visiting the Loving ward”, “Soul Concert” and “Interaction between Doctors and Patients”. 

Mrs. Liu Xiaohong,  Chief of the Spiritual Care Program introduces the lasting tenet of the concert as “To care sometimes, to comfort often, to help always”. The concert is one of famous way to help patients by Spiritual Care Department of Hunan Cancer Hospital. This concert is staged through cooperation between students from Xiangya School of Medicine and volunteers from the hospital. The concert means to stir up the festival atmosphere to render hospice service, humanitarian care to the patients under medical treatment.  

Liu Xiaohong introduces that volunteers in foreign countries will organize teams of“clown doctors”, who use their love and humors to relieve the patients’ anxiety and fear for diseases and give them both psychological and physical excitement. The medical Spiritual Care team of the hospital borrows from the experience of their foreign counterparts and begins to carry out the concept of “clown doctor” after considering circumstances of the hospital. Volunteer doctors playing the Santa interact with the patents by doing games so as to give them psychological intervention treatment.   

During the activity, students from the Xiangya School of Medicine are also invited to pay visits to patients of their age at the “National Youth Civilized Department”of the hospital.  “Same age but different life. “Through their deep-going communication with the patients, the medical students gain a deeper and better understanding of the clinical medicine and “humanitarian education in medicine”. It encourages the students to care for the patients and give them better medical and nursing services in their future career. During the activity, the hospital also gives financial assistance to 3 poverty-stricken patients.
