The Hospital’s Delegation Attends the 2017 GAP Conference

This year’s MD Anderson Cancer Center Global Academic Program (GAP) Annual Conference was held in Houston on May 7-9. The Annual Conference provides a forum for faculty from both MD Anderson and Sister Institutions to develop collaborations and exchange research results, and share knowledge/ideas. As one of the Sister Institutions our hospital is invited to attend the participate in this annual event in Houston. Our hospital dispatches a 9-member delegation led by President Xiangguo Liu to attend the conference. During the conference, President Liu spent time to acquire the first-hand knowledge of MD Anderson's overall hospital management, including the system of managing and operating clinical departments, hardware construction, and cultural development. President Liu also had several in-depth discussion with key personnel/leaders of MD Anderson on future collaborations.

President Liu Xiangguo met with Dr.Ethan Dmitrovsky, the Provost and Executive Vice President and Dr.Oliver Bogle, the Vice President of GAP, seperately. Firstly, President Liu expressed his sincere thanks to MD Anderson Cancer Center for providing support in staff training and scientific research collaboration for the past three years. He subsequently shared the hospital's achievements and progresses and its long-term development plans. He also hoped that both sides could further strengthen the communication and deepen the cooperation in the aspect of selecting administrative logistics staff for short-term training, as well as PhD candidates for further study and research in MD Anderson. While Dr.Dmitrovsky expressed his support for the communication in the personnel training of administrative staff and students. He wished to expand the collaboration from the personnel training to scientific research, especially in the clinical researches. Furthermore, President Liu had in-depth talks over both current and future collaboration with relevant experts on the following programmes: 1) Tobacco control. The talk was held with tobacco control experts Dr.Alexander Prokhorov and Karen Calabro. Our hospital will be expected to obtain the exclusive use of tobacco control App in China. And tobacco control experts from our hospital will be selected for training and learning in the MD Anderson. 2) Betel nut control. The talk was held with betel nut control expert Dr.Irene Tami-Maury to lay a foundation for both sides’ joint research on betel nut control. 3) Construction of Medical facility. Opinions on the oxygen selection program in our hospital were exchanged with Dr. Yeqiao Zhu, an expert in medical construction. And further communication with Dr. Zhu on the architecture planning of our hospital is expected in the future.

Through constructive and effective discussions, both sides have enhanced the understanding and trust, broadened the cooperation, and enriched cooperation connotations. Our hospital will continue to deepen and implement the exchange and cooperation with MD Anderson Cancer Center, aiming at realizing the internationalization of medical service, scientific research, and hospital management, and striving to become a cancer center with global influence.

A total of eight experts in our delegation have given the keynote speeches in or presided over the parallel sessions.

Vice President Wang Jing gave a keynote speech entitled “Expression of New Therapeutic Target CSPG4 Proteoglycan and its Related Signaling Pathways in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer”;

Dr. He Zhengwen presided over the session entitled “Advances in the Management of Brain and Spine Tumors”;

Dr. Hu Jun gave a keynote speech entitled “Brief introduction of Hunan Cancer Hospital Tissue-bank”;

Dr. Xie Yu gave a keynote speech entitled “Application of 3D-printing technology in nephron-sparing surgery”;

Liu Xiangyu gave a keynote speech entitled “Spirituality and spiritual care in China: Nurses’ perceptions and barriers”;

Lu Xuwei gave a keynote speech entitled “Theoretical basis in biological effect for combining extra magnetic field with radiotherapy”;

Dr. Song Dajiang gave a keynote speech entitled “The clinical applpcation of free antteromedial thigh(AMT)perforator flap in the reconstruction of tongue and mouth floor defect after tongue carcinoma”;

Dr. Zhang Yongchang gave a keynote speech entitled “243 TrxR1:A novel Biomarker Proved to Be Prognostic Factor and Evidence to Provide Newly Treatment Strategies in Meatastic EGFR Wild-Type NSCLC”.

Arranged and led by Dr. Ta-Jen Liu, our delegation also visited the MD Anderson Cancer Center to get a more comprehensive understanding. As the world’s top cancer center, the MD Anderson Cancer has gained its reputation through advanced medical system, scientific operation and management, and excellent supervision mechanism. The combination of scientific research and clinical treatment provides a solid foundation for scientific research. Through clinical trials, it puts scientific research into clinical treatment, which can in turn support each other and complement each other. These characteristics and merits are well worth learning and drawing upon.
